Was the so-called barley coffee made in Latgale before?
Yes, it was, when it was impossible to buy any coffee, people made also barley coffee. In the same way, barley was roasted and milled, then water or milk was poured over. Such a drink also existed. Sometimes people added carrots to make that coffee sweeter. Chicory coffee was prepared, too. People themselves dug and roasted chicory. There were various ways how to make one’s own tasty coffee.
