Lubou Veramei: About food storage

I also would like to ask you where did you keep food, meat, for example? You see, now we have fridges, and what about that times?
Meat? We sticked a pig, salted the meat and put into the barrel. The barrel had a cover; we closed it and left till spring. In spring we took the barrel out, usually in March, and aired meat, hung the hocks out under the roof. And… they aired there, dried, and then we did them over with any clothes, we did them over with a clean cloth and hung them. There were klet’s (transl. special cages) where grain was kept, and it was cut there and there was a crib all around and even under the roof, under the thatched roof and there was a crib all around firmly. Well. There were lots of nails there and we hung them this way. And salo, and bigger pieces of salo. And we hung them. I was hanging like this. You never could tell. Sometimes there were worms in some pieces. Everything could happen. Sometimes we threw it away, but sometimes we put it into the oven in the pan and they came out, then we ate it. What should we do? Everything could happen. We didn’t have fridges. That is that.
What did you do from the milk products? From milk?
We made cheese, we saved up the milk. Well. When it was lent, we couldn’t eat milk, so mother saved up all milk in bowls. There was a «varaunya» (trasl. a big pot), big … big basins or these bowls. So they filled them and then made cheeses. Well, we churned butter.
